MK-4 (Menaquinone-4) is a form of vitamin K2 belonging to the menaquinone family. Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin required for the activation of vitamin K-dependent proteins involved in normal blood clotting and bone metabolism. MK-4 can be produced by the body from vitamin K1 through a non-bacterial conversion pathway.
MK-4 (Menaquinone-4) is one of the naturally occurring forms of vitamin K2. Menaquinones are designated MK-4 through MK-13 according to the length of their side chain, with MK-4 being one of the most studied forms.
Vitamin K functions as a cofactor for enzymes that activate proteins involved in normal blood coagulation and bone metabolism. MK-4 is distinctive among menaquinones because the human body can produce it from phylloquinone (vitamin K1) through a conversion process that does not depend on bacteria.
MK-4 is naturally present in modest amounts in foods such as certain meats, eggs, cheese, and other animal-derived foods. It is also available as a dietary supplement, either alone or combined with nutrients such as vitamin D3, calcium, or magnesium.
The amount of MK-4 can vary considerably between supplements. When purchasing an MK-4 product, check the exact amount per serving, whether it is combined with vitamin D or minerals, serving size, and manufacturer's directions.
