About this ingredient
Ingredients
Red Yeast Rice is rice fermented with the fungus Monascus purpureus. Depending on the fungal strain and fermentation conditions, it may contain naturally occurring monacolins, including monacolin K, which is chemically identical to the cholesterol-lowering medicine lovastatin. Red yeast rice may also contain pigments and other fermentation-derived compounds. The exact composition and monacolin content can vary considerably between products.
Red Yeast Rice is produced by fermenting rice with Monascus fungi and has a long history of use in traditional food and herbal preparations. Despite its common name, Monascus purpureus is technically a mold rather than a single-celled yeast.
During fermentation, certain strains can produce monacolins, including monacolin K. Monacolin K is chemically identical to lovastatin, which means red yeast rice products containing significant amounts can have effects and safety considerations similar to statin medicines.
Red Yeast Rice is commonly included in nutritional supplements marketed for cholesterol and cardiovascular wellness. However, the amount of monacolin K can vary substantially, and consumers generally cannot determine the actual amount from the product name alone. Products with little or no monacolin K may not have the same effects as products containing substantial amounts.
Another quality concern is citrinin, a contaminant that can form during poorly controlled fermentation and may damage the kidneys. Consumers should therefore check product quality information, manufacturer details, and the complete label before purchasing.
